It’s easy to forget that just over a decade ago, creating any type of visual representation or really any sort of art outside calligraphy was forbidden in Taliban-run Afghanistan. Being an artist was a crime that could have been punishable by death. Even today after the demise of the Taliban government, it is difficult for many artists in Afghanistan to openly practice their craft. Even if they are able to, funding for such artists and related programs is virtually non-existent. The Kabul Art Project seeks to change this by providing support and the means for many contemporary Afghan artists to share their talent with the world.
Below are some examples of some of the amazing paintings that many of these artists have produced.
