Not too far the happening town of Varaždin is Varaždinske Toplice, a place known mainly for one thing: it’s healing hot springs. Yes, the best hot springs and one of the best natural wellness centers in all of southeastern Europe is located in here. The springsof this Croatian oasis town have been used by locals and travelers alike at least since the Romans established a wellness settlement known as Aqua Iasae here in the 1st century AD, the ruins of which you can explore.
Most people when they come here go straight to the Hotel Minerva. The Minerva is conveniently built around Varaždinske Toplice’s thermal springs which are said have special curative effects for those who wade in them. Though the architecture is a bit odd, the hotel does have some of the best spa and wellness facilities in the region and is replete with several pools (indoor and outdoor), a fitness center and a sauna.
Along with the springs and the spas that they support, Varaždinske Toplice also has some historic buildings of note including the caste of Stari Grad and couple of neo-Gothic churches, one dating at least to the 13th century. The city museum is also a worthy place to spend an hour learning about Varaždinske Toplice’s history and also that of the nearby region.
